Meebo widgets

Well i have to say that the meebo widget has been a great success so far in providing expert help from our groups intranet site, however you gotta love this i got asked the following

"People have raised concerns that 'the meebo' could infect documents on the website with open source code"

I have pointed out that the widget is a Adobe Flash object and not 'Open Source' do we think that some general information sharing as to Open Source is required?

Adventures in Ubuntu

Well Day three has come and gone and i'm really enjoying the OS. Its smooth, quick, my laptop battery doesn't go down as quick. I'm most impressed by how easy the Open Office Suite is to use, i get emailed doc's and ppt's all the time to read and review and the interaction is seamless i can open, read, edit and save the documents and then send them all back using Microsoft's propietary formats. No one in CSC would know that they've been edited using Open Source software

Adventures in Ubuntu

Day 2
After using Sametime 7.5 and the Lotus Notes Web client, i decided to investigate WINE, this is an open source Binary compatability layer for linux that allows certain Windows programmes to be run natively in Linux, so as you can see, here's the proper Lotus notes client running on Ubuntu. Its all good!!

Adventures in Ubuntu

Adventures in Ubuntu.
Right i've decided to go Open Source, My IBM T42 is now dual boot and i'm running Windows XP (or rather i aim not too) and Ubuntu. So far Ubuntu is a doddle to install, nice friendly GUI, easier than Windows. I've decided to run this experiment for a month to see if i can do my job in the EIC without using Windows. I'm going to doc the trials and tribulations here. So far so good though, my machine now boots and turns on in seconds rather than minutes :) the main reason i'm attempting this is that i now have Corporate messaging systems in place that mean i don't have to rely on Microsoft. I've installed the Lotus samtime linux client and i'm using the web based Notes client. Linux HAVE released a notes client plugin but i'll doc that install later :)

Luke's Stag Do

Portal Tech

Sure everybodies seen this but how cool is this trailer? Portal one of the funniest game trailers i think i've ever seen, plus genius physics!

Collaborative environment

Check out OpenCroquet open source 3d interactive world toolkit kit built on Squeak and Smalltalk, i've donwloaded the beta, its quite cool, works differently to a multiplayer gaming environment as in there is no central server, rather it works on a peer to peer synchronisation format.

Display Tech

Things i'm looking at for the Innovation Centre in terms of display technology.
going to go and see an Israeli company called MagInk that make digital signage, its a lightweight as paper yet can transfrom itself with images (full colour) and will fun video at 50fps! seems cool

MagInk

Also going to go and see a company called Betaminds, they are UK resellers of a heliodisplay, now this is cool an image is projected onto a wall of compressed air, very high tech although the geeks out there will remember the same thing in Captain Bridger's stateroom in SeaQuest DSV (don't even ask how my memory remember stuff like this!!)

BetaMinds

i've got the SUSE feeling

SUSE is awesome

Engadget Engadget Updated: Tue, 6 Jul 2004 10:10 PM

Reinventing the wheel (couldn't resist) By Simon Spagnoletti Apparently tired of the overtly flashy stuff, the latest robots out of Japan are simple wheels. Built by Shinichi Hirai and Yuuta Sugiyama, they are four cm in diameter and one cm thick and move by changing shape. The spokes of the wheel are made of a shape-memory alloy, a substance that shortens when heated, and the picture does a pretty good job of explaining the movement (so we don’t have to). They’re powered by copper wires right now, but a battery-powered version is planned, as well as a ball-shaped design using a bunch of the robots. The best part is that they weren’t made for any particular reason. These guys were probably sitting in a lab one day and one of them said something like “I like wheels. Let’s see what we can do with that.” And the rest was history. Tue, 6 Jul 2004 04:24 PM

Would you choose to do this??? do you want to see the future? would we become more intelligent if we had the oppurtunity to learn more? Would this only be available to the rich Western societies? TIA lives? Report lists US gov 'dataveillance' activities | The RegisterThis is a bit worrying, on the one hand do you want the government to be able to datamine for information that may protect you against terrorist attacks? that has to be a worthwhile goal, however the current administrations policy of preemptive control as opposed to the traditional American isolationist principles make it a much more worrying proposition. Information can be used badly and it can also be manipulated to prove the case for harming people and countries. Seems like we are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, here's hoping for regime change in Washington later on in the year. Principles shoule be an inherent trait of government not a 4 year term of office

Life, the Universe and why stats can make you feel better

Life eh?? whats the point of it all? We get up every day, shower, dress (iron a t shirt) leave the house and either get in our cars (or other peoples) and travel to a place of work. Sit there for 7.5 hours (maybe have some lunch) then turn around and head home. We relax, watch tv and sleep, then we do it all again. Its kinda depressing to think that in this week where Scientists (you go guys) have discovered that the UNIVERSE is actually a billion years older than they thought it was (14.3 instead of 13.3) that we spend so much of our infitisamal time on the planet in such mundane pursuits!!! Average life span of a western man in the UK, what is it now? 86 maybe? 90 possibily, so i'm sitting here at 28 (soon to be 29) that's a third of my time used up already (at the high end as well!!!) a third!!! thats ridiculous!! i haven't DONE ANYTHING YET!!! and i've used a third of the time up!! This of course is a failing in our species as our young are so crap they can't do anything on their own for the first 18 years (some parents may disagree with this low figure!!) So technically if you remove the first 18 years from the figure of 90 that leaves us with 72, and then technically i've only been independent for 10 years so really i'm only 1 seventh of the way thru my life!!!! Damn thats a relief i was starting to get depressed about that!!!
