Reinventing the wheel (couldn't resist)

By Simon Spagnoletti

wheel robot
Apparently tired of the overtly flashy stuff, the latest robots out of Japan are simple wheels. Built by Shinichi Hirai and Yuuta Sugiyama, they are four cm in diameter and one cm thick and move by changing shape. The spokes of the wheel are made of a shape-memory alloy, a substance that shortens when heated, and the picture does a pretty good job of explaining the movement (so we don’t have to). They’re powered by copper wires right now, but a battery-powered version is planned, as well as a ball-shaped design using a bunch of the robots. The best part is that they weren’t made for any particular reason. These guys were probably sitting in a lab one day and one of them said something like “I like wheels. Let’s see what we can do with that.” And the rest was history.

fight aging - extend your life

The Longevity Meme -- live healthily - fight aging - extend your lifeThis is a really interesting article, the author predicts using models that the average human life span could be extended (with you looking youthful the entire time) to around 1000 years. Would you choose to do this??? do you want to see the future? would we become more intelligent if we had the oppurtunity to learn more? Would this only be available to the rich Western societies? He's used death models to show how many people die in different countries every year from natural causes!! staggering number of people karking it every day!! His figures reckon that in the entire history of man around 34 billion of us have walked the planet of which 28 billion have already died!!

TIA lives? Report lists US gov 'dataveillance' activities | The RegisterThis is a bit worrying, on the one hand do you want the government to be able to datamine for information that may protect you against terrorist attacks? that has to be a worthwhile goal, however the current administrations policy of preemptive control as opposed to the traditional American isolationist principles make it a much more worrying proposition. Information can be used badly and it can also be manipulated to prove the case for harming people and countries. Seems like we are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, here's hoping for regime change in Washington later on in the year. Principles shoule be an inherent trait of government not a 4 year term of office

Life, the Universe and why stats can make you feel better

Life eh?? whats the point of it all? We get up every day, shower, dress (iron a t shirt) leave the house and either get in our cars (or other peoples) and travel to a place of work. Sit there for 7.5 hours (maybe have some lunch) then turn around and head home. We relax, watch tv and sleep, then we do it all again. Its kinda depressing to think that in this week where Scientists (you go guys) have discovered that the UNIVERSE is actually a billion years older than they thought it was (14.3 instead of 13.3) that we spend so much of our infitisamal time on the planet in such mundane pursuits!!! Average life span of a western man in the UK, what is it now? 86 maybe? 90 possibily, so i'm sitting here at 28 (soon to be 29) that's a third of my time used up already (at the high end as well!!!) a third!!! thats ridiculous!! i haven't DONE ANYTHING YET!!! and i've used a third of the time up!! This of course is a failing in our species as our young are so crap they can't do anything on their own for the first 18 years (some parents may disagree with this low figure!!) So technically if you remove the first 18 years from the figure of 90 that leaves us with 72, and then technically i've only been independent for 10 years so really i'm only 1 seventh of the way thru my life!!!! Damn thats a relief i was starting to get depressed about that!!!

Did you realise that they also compete technology wise against each other, each branch is developing its own UAV technology, madness!!! but strangely enough all this money is being spent, especially in the area of quick technology turnaround for the battlefield, and yet DARPA has had its money cut down by over a 100 million dollars, this to me is strange?? they are the cutting edge and if they aren't who is??

After their successful Mars trip (documented only here on the Magic Bullet) it appears that these silicon superiors are taking a pot-shot at our cultural heritage. This one is successfully conducting an orchestra. There is no image of the orchestra itself, so I am assuming that the musicians are under the robot's spell and have probably been chained to their chairs.

City Journal Spring 2004 | What We Dont Know Can Hurt Us by Heather Mac DonaldThis is a really long article but makes great reading. About Darpa's TOTAL INFORMATION AWARENESS program that has recently been cancelled. In the wake of 9/11 and the USA's war on terror it makes a really good point that the average Senator and American, generally distrusts its own government. The need for increased security and the ability to allow the intelligence services access to information that they require to help prevent further attacks, seem to be diametrically opposed to what some senators believe is in the Constitution??? it really is a melting pot over there. A country technologically advanced with people as religiously extreme as any you will find in the middle east, yet with a shrunken view of the world outside their town/state. Anatomical cake wastes time for talented individual who obviously has nothing better to do...

Makes me mad! Hang on though, that's quite educational... if a bit freaky - do you think it encourages cannibalism.

This Hallowe'en cake is a replica of a Gray's Anatomy illustration of a complete thoraxic cavity. Swoon.

The plan was for each organ to be made out of a different kind of cake and to secrete a different color of fluid when it was cut into. Previous heart cakes have bled fresh, homemade raspberry sauce. This year I made raspberry, strawberry, kiwi, mango, and blueberry sauces. Sadly, the organs didn't bleed as well as I had hoped when I cut the cake, as each organ was relatively small and couldn't hold much sauce. Also all the moving around after filling the organs made it hard to keep the sauce contained in the little cavities I hollowed out. The heart bled pretty well, but the other organ fluids weren't very dramatic.

Emergency! The laws of robotics need to be put into legislation before it's too late.

Asimov's laws of robotics were fictional rules governing the behaviour of autonomous robots. Now, Sony have created robots that can dance in such a convincing manner that I thought this was either an April fools joke or little men dressed in robot costumes.

I wonder if they recognise the phrase, "Can you get me another beer please?"

I love diving - but imagine traversing those peaceful dive sites on a motorbike?!

This HAS to be an April Fool's joke come early, surely?

The Scubadoo is an AUS$17,500 "underwater motorcycle" that looks like something off of Space: 1999's aquatic habitat ship, shipping soon. It does 2.5 knots and carries an hour's worth of air.

Britain makes a formal complaint to Argentina over a naval vessel sailing in Falkland Islands waters.

Come on.... kick it off - we've got some technology we want to try out! Lewis - any rants relating to this?

I love a good war me!!! nothing like watching BBC news 24 to help stem off the insomnia, however kicking off with the Argies again seems rather limited to me in terms of good tv??? There'll never be a land war and most of their heavy cruisers are crap these days have a look at their military spending here
Whats the Argies spend their cash on

Be good to get our nuclear subs out though, it'd be a watery theatre so we'd have some great footage i'll be expecting carmeras mounted on torpedos!! that'd be class!!!

Do they try they're best to improve the quality of my life (by providing access to top quality porn???) NO they decide to provide full broadband to the entire population of Northern Ireland!!! (at least 50% of they're population don't even want to be part of the UK!!!) plus the other mob (loyalists) led by the (hell fire spouting, white haired maniac) Preacher Paisley will just bang on for months that its part of Mi5's plan to bug the entire nation!! how many IRA boys do you thnk are going to subscribe and stay online all bloody day eh??? practise their first person shooter games in case of a return to the troubles??? Bollox to it i say!!! nobody's going to swallow our governments good work!!! Has noone heard of ECHELON!!!!

Well good old Ariel Sharon and the Israeli military appear to be doing their bit for middle east security again!! Taking out the spiritual leader of Hamas, come on lads thats not likely to provoke a response now is it??? And the method they choose to assassinate the good Sheik? Do they send in a stealthy hit squad of Mossad agents in a convoluted execution involving bluff, double bluff and Olga Kleb style poisoned daggers coming out of the front of the boots scenario...........................??? No......................Do they attempt to send the Sheik explosive cigars like the ill fated CIA plan to get rid of Castro...............??? No the Israeli's (who lets face have got the biggest poor me complex in the history of the world (which can be justified admittidely)) decide to take the sheik out as he's being pushed (yes thats right folks he's in a wheelchair) out of a Mosque, and do threy take him out clean with a single shot to the head???? NOPE in one of the grandest shows of over the top extremism they take him (literally) out of his wheelchair with a missile strike!!!!!! I mean for god's sake can anyone over there spell overkill (no pun intended!!) The bit that cracks me up is most of these smart missile type things are spotted on the ground by teams of agenrts who light the target up with infra red beams!! The Sheik was probably wheeling along thinking what the hell's up with all these red dots??? who's playing funny buggers??? next thing they're cleaning him off the road using a bucket and spade, and Hamas are banging on about the Israeli's opening the gates of hell!! Anybody have any ideas how to resolve this conflict??? Answers on a postcard to MAGIC BULLET

MSN Hotmail - More Useful Everydayoh dear oh dear oh dear!! another one in the eye for the american intelligence service!! mind you benefit of hindsight and all that even though they apparently knew where bin laden was in 2002, they probably figured that by keeping him under surveillance was a long term better prospect, hard to predict the kind of scale of attack that Al-qaeda unleashed against the states a year later!!! mind you losing him after that hasn't exactly helped matters!!
BBC NEWS | UK | Al-Qaeda 'warns of attack on UK'Ever get the sinking feeling of inevitability??? Terrorist options suspended in Spain as a result of Zapotera withdrawing troops from Iraq, its carrot or stick diplomacy from the terrorists!!! probably a good option to stay out of London at the moment!! still thats a prime target, so why not blow up trains in Birmingham??? we live in dangerous times..........
